Top 11 Simple things you could be doing to help you retain your clients

  1. 1. Getting to know some aspects of your clients personal life without being evasive, or being an absolute creep, when you ask a client about their weekend, make sure you pay active attention to what they say as that would lead you into future discussions, it’s really that simple.
  1. 2. Memorising names of the family members and friends, this is one of the best ways to keep your relationship with your clients very fluid and effortless, it simple just means you care enough to remember that and makes you look like a superstar family member and not to mention maybe someday you can get the opportunity to train those people.
  1. 3. Remembering key events and dates (birthdays, anniversary, etc), a personal trainer who can do this automatically secures a friend and client for a long time, imagine your someone your spend money on their service turning around and giving you a present or just simply acknowledging a key event in your life.
  2. 4. Taking before and after photos, this I cannot stress enough, if you have no before photo of your client they cannot tell progress in some cases, especially if they are clients that are finding it difficult to loose weights (numbers game) you can show them how different they look, even better with measurements written down and saved on your clients profile.

Reading similar interest articles, yet again without coming of as evasive, if your client is reading an article or a book that you find interesting, you can always hire that book, read it and share discussions about that book or article with the client during your session, you will learn a lot from them and yet again makes the whole experience seem so much more effortless, if reading is not your thing, how about audio books?
  1. 6. Taking clients out for breakfast or lunch or dinner, now you have to be careful with this one, make sure when you invite a client to breakfast or lunch you keep the discussion professional and still based around what you coach them for, but make sure you both have fun.
  1. 7. Sms and call to keep in contact, always keep in contact even when they no longer need your service, still call and check up on how they are doing and still use the key events and anniversary as reason or point of contact.
  2. 8. Getting them into challenging event, once your client has achieved a mini goals or milestones, sometimes they could be lost with a goal and start relapsing, that’s when you introduce an event, like obstacle course, marathons, etc… it gives your client something to look forward to and best of all gives them a sense of achievement and drive, also make sure you are part of it.
  3. 9. Getting there friends and family involved, you are more likely to retain a client if their friends and family members are involved, because they circle of influence will now have a stronger bond and understanding of the new found healthy lifestyle and keep each other accountable, making you yet again a superstar.
  1. 10. Shopping tour with your clients, take them to the grocery store show them the right isle, how to check nutrition facts and ingredients on any item purchased, show them what’s healthy and what isn’t.
  1. 11. Stretching after every session as it gives that personal touch, I am not saying be a creep but you should offer to stretch your clients, it can be relaxing for the client and help with mobilising a few a joints (see stretch tutorial).
  2. Do the little things like carry their water bottle, refill the bottle, carry towel…etc do the little things and get stuck on their minds.
